Le croquis initial

La série des concerts est née d’un croquis initial réalisé durant une représentation de la Symphonie fantastique de Berlioz. La beauté de l’éclairage tombant sur les cuivres et les bois, le jeu des couleurs entre les rouges ambrés des caisses, les blancs des cols, les noirs des costumes, le bleu de la nuit déchiré par les archets, mais aussi tout ce savant placement de la formation des musiciens paraissait trop pictural pour le laisser échapper.
Aussi lié qu’il soit à une expérience personnelle, le motif des concerts, notamment dans la représentation des instrumentistes, les têtes carrées, emprunte aux footballeurs de la série « parc des princes » de Nicolas De Stael…

The initial sketch

The concert series was born out of an initial sketch made during a performance of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. The beauty of the lighting falling on the brass and woodwinds, the play of colors between the amber reds of the cases, the whites of the collars, the blacks of the costumes, the blue of the night torn by the bows, but also all this scholarly placement of the musicians' training seemed too pictorial to let him escape.
As linked as it is to a personal experience, the reason for the concerts, particularly in the representation of the instrumentalists, the square heads, borrows from the footballers of the series "Parc des Princes" by Nicolas De Stael ...

Inspiration & Variations / Altérations

De ce croquis initial sur un bout de papier est née la série toute entière des concerts. Ce motif met en jeu tout à la fois les gammes chromatiques (les rapports entre les rouges (laque garance, rouge écarlate, … ) et les bleus (bleu prussien, bleu phtalocyanine, etc), les constructions savantes dans les volumes ainsi que les rapports entre les plans (premier et second plan, fond et scène, partie haute en drapés et partie basse en dallages, …), les jeux de lumière, les jeux entre figuration et abstraction. La série des concertistes sur double carré horizontaux est fortement inspirée par l’ultime tableau de Nicolas de Stael, Le concert inachevé de 1955…
Le concert en tant que figure parfois devient secondaire et ce qui importe c’est la matière et l’harmonie.

Inspiration & Variations / Alterations

From this initial sketch on a piece of paper was born the whole series of concerts. This motif brings into play all at the same time the chromatic scales (the relationships between the reds (madder lacquer, scarlet red,…) and the blues (Prussian blue, phthalocyanine blue, etc.), the learned constructions in the volumes as well as the relationships between the plans (foreground and background, background and scene, upper part in drapery and lower part in paving, ...), the play of light, the games between figuration and abstraction. The series of concertists on double horizontal squares is strongly inspired by the last painting by Nicolas de Stael, The unfinished concert, oil on canvas [6 m × 3.5 m] painted from March 14 to 16, 1955…
The concert as a figure sometimes becomes secondary and what matters is the matter and the harmony.

Concerts français, concerts flamboyants...

Une terminologie des concerts s’est construite avec le temps : les concerts français (bleu/ blanc / rouge) s’opposent aux concerts flamboyants (à dominante globale rouge / orange) et aux concerts « austères » (blanc / noir / rouge). Par ailleurs, les concerts historiquement peints exclusivement sur des formats paysages (25P, 30P) ont été « recadrés » sur des carrés pour être exposés dans les galeries carré d’artistes (13x13, 19x19, 25x25, 36x36, 50s50, 80s80). L’esthétique des concerts suit celle des villes : une tendance à la liquidité / fluidité amplifiée tant par les glacis que par le medium alkyde.

French & Burning concerts

Concert terminology has been built up over time: French concerts (blue / white / red) are opposed to flamboyant concerts (predominantly red / orange) and "austere" concerts (white / black / red). In addition, the concerts historically painted exclusively on landscape formats (25P, 30P) have been "cropped" on squares to be exhibited in artists' square galleries (13x13, 19x19, 25x25, 36x36, 50s50, 80s80). The aesthetic of the concerts follows that of the cities: a tendency towards liquidity / fluidity amplified both by the glazes and by the alkyd medium.
